Batman : The Animated Series

One of my Xmas gifts from my sister was the first boxed set of Batman: The Animated Series. I had really forgotten how cool it was.

Damn... There is a real stinker on the first disc though. "The Underdwellers" was really really reminding me of the ancient Punky Brewster cartoon because the villain just looked so goofy and it came across more of as one of those old moral of the story bits at the end of a G.I.Joe or He-Man cartoon then the rest of the Batman cartoons did.

The show had and still has a great deal of style. Only just now starting on the second of the four discs in the box and it looks to promise some better episodes then the first disc did.

Definately reminds me of when it was first on. I remember just falling silent when it came on and just staring at the tv until it was over. It was so entirely different from anything else that was on tv at the time.

It does show its age a little. Or maybe that is me sitting 18" away from a higher resolution screen then when I watched it before. Been watching it on my computer monitor in my new desk chair ( my other Xmas gift from my sister, she stole it from her office which I think makes me an accessory to her crime in some way or another ) since it is actually more comfortable then my sofa. Easier to keep my office heated then my living room too.

Batman Beyond from a few years back wasn't a bad cartoon version of Batman updated to take place a little bit into the future. Wasn't great, but had some nice takes on the rogue's gallery.

Saw the new Batman cartoon the other day, actually seen it a few times when I remember it is on. Liked the music on it, not too fond of the animation style. I do have to give them points for a more interesting (IMNSHO) version of the Penguin and the Man-Bat, though if I remember right thier version of the ice guy (Dr. Freeze?) whose name escapes me at the moment was a bit disappointing after the very cool version that had gone before.

Anyways, back to watching the dvds. 21 episodes to go still in this boxed set.

Oh, maybe someone can answer this for me who also has this boxed set or the later ones.

Who are the episodes organized? Are they in order of original airing date? Are they all from the same season? Is it just random?

Kind of confused by the arrangement of them on the dvds with the second episode being 'Christmas with the Joker' and having Robin and none of the other episodes so far having him ( never liked Robin anyways... Boy Hostage and all that ).

My understanding is that the BTAS season DVDs are, in fact, grouped by season, but I don't know anything about the internal sorting.

WB has been infamous in its one-off collections at picking 3-4 eps at random from a series, which was why their seasonal collections have been such a big step forward.

Hmmmm. Okay, it's actually 28 eps (not necessarily an entire season). Still, the sequencing seems odd. It's also possible (since it was one of the earliest eps) that the creators hadn't quite figured out what to do about Robin, tried him out, then quietly dropped him until a later season.

I knew that WB had done some really weird 'Have a few totally random episodes!' dvds in the past, couple that with the fact that the box isn't labeled 'Season One' but is instead 'Volume One' and the somewhat strange internal sequence of episodes and you can see where my confusion was originating from...

So, from what I remember there were 85 total episodes in the series. With 28 per boxed set, and only the first 3 boxes are the original animated series.. ( the fourth boxed set is the 24 episode series they followed up with later, "The New Adventures of Batman & Robin" that took place 2 years after the first series ended with a new Robin and the old one going on to be Nightwing )

But.. Uh.. 3 x 28 is 84? Does the 2nd or 3rd box have 29 episodes? Is the 85th episode in the 4th boxed set?

Damn.. Disc 2 with the two-part 'Two-Face' episode and 'Heart of Ice' introducing the animated series version of Mr. Freeze... I had so entirely forgotten how completely freaking cool those episodes were.

Looking forward to the two-part 'Feat of Clay' episode on disc 3. Remember it being very damned cool too.

Though I still like the version of the Penguin in the current animated series better, the more 'Cobblepot' Penguin somewhat reminiscent of the movie one rather then just a bird-obsessed guy with a big nose.

I loved what they did with Mr Freeze. Clay Face was pretty cool, too. I've never been a penguin fan (Burgess Meredith notwithstanding).

And then there's this.
