The soldiers crawled through the mud and the brush. Their destination was ahead, the only high point in the entire battlefield. The gun emplacement on the ridge was going to rip the reinforcement convoy to shreds if it wasn't silenced and fast. They were close enough to smell the tobacco of the cheap cigarettes the guards up top were smoking.

It stood up against the sky in the distance, a constant marker. Every day for years, Meredith would spend some part of her day staring at it, wondering what was beyond it, what could possibily lie so far afield from the farm where she felt imprisoned.

Didn't actually use the word, but I think the image is conveyed. Hmmmm... sounds like the West to me. I have cowboys on the brain.
