They came out from the underbrush, naked except for the mud and the symbols tattooed upon their skin. The fire roared as they formed a circle around it. Drums began to be heard, beaten by someone just outside of the firelight. A low gutteral howl rose up from the crowd as they began a slow dance around the fire, stately in ways that are almost inhuman to describe.
Hmm. I actually didn't use todays word in mine, but I think the imagery is pretty well grounded in what the word brought to mind for me.

She wanted to say no, to disagree, but that just wouldn't do. You didn't tell Leader Howard "no." You couldn't. And you couldn't explain why, just that there was a line of others, happy, shiny others in the cult, who were happy to say yes when you refused.
