Damn it...

I hate it when this happens. I had something deep and profound to write when I sat down, and the moment I began typing it slipped away so fast I can't even make out the shape of the hole in my thoughts that the idea once filled. So you are going to get random crap instead.

Grumpy because the first MirrorMask showing in Oregon isn't until the 14th of October. Check the theater listings here to see where the first showing is by wherever you are. MirrorMask was written by Neil Gaiman ( of Sandman fame ) whose blog can be found here.

Unrelated movie sidenote, of all of the comic properties I could have imagined them turning into a movie, Ghost Rider would not have made my list. I don't know why I couldn't picture it. It has everything needed for an action movie: dangerous rebel main character ( stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze ), some cool props ( his head turns into a flaming skull and he has a cool motorcycle ), a touch of supernatural evil ( main character makes a deal with the devil ), and lots of senseless violence ( he deals out vigilante justice ). Which basically means lots of motorcycle stunts, flame and explosions, as well as people being beaten by chains. Apparently it will be starring Nicholas Cage and set to come out July 2006.

I'm very excited - I'm going to see a reading by Neil Gaiman and Susanna Clarke (of "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell") on Monday night, and my copy of "Anansi Boys" should be on its way from Powell's any minute! Wooohooo!

Though, in bad news -- I'm sure you don't want to hear this...

the forums are down.

Arrrrrggggghhhhh!!!!!!

But cool that you got Anansi Boys from Powell's. One of my favorite bits about Portland, having the biggest bookstore west of the Mississippi.

Okay, tech support has been nagged. Glad I snuck out of the meeting I am supposed to be in long enough to wash the 'handshake slime' off of my hands and check my blog and the forums.

*cough*

There is a dispute as too biggest west of the Mississippi.

Tattered Cover in Denver Or Powell's.

I think Powell's wins if you add the "Used section" if I remember correctly.

Powell's doesn't actually have a used section. They shelve the used books alongside the new ones on the shelves. Which is kind of cool because you can often find out of print books by authors you like in used copies.

As for size... The main Powell's building is a full city block in square footage, 4 stories tall.

It also has an annex ( Powell's Technical ) two blocks east ( towards the river ) which is another half city block that is only one story of store space and is entirely technical, scientific and programming manuals.

At Pioneer Courthouse Square, about eight blocks south and four blocks east, it has another annex about the size of your normal mall bookstore that is entirely travel and cookbooks.

As well as smaller stores at the airport and Beavertron.

But for biggest, they only count the main store when doing the store size.

Next time I swing by, I'll have to get one of the maps they give out and see if I can't figure out how to scan something that big and see if I can't remember to take a camera with me to take pictures.

Wow... It's like the mother ship calling me home.

I'm not sure NYC's The Strand bookstore, which advertises its "miles" of books, is anywhere near as cool.

Hmmm...Powell's might just have the Tattered Cover beat.

40k sqft (4 floors) in the main store 177,000 title in stock.

It is like a toy store for me, and I am very glad that they validate parking ('cause it would be expensive otherwise).

Bonus...they opened a new store 1 mile away from Doyce and Jackie.
